Citrus juicers are the optimal tool for juicing oranges, tangerines, grapefruit, lemons and lime. These juicers are specially designed to handle the seeds and membrane as well as the thick citrus skin that most other machines cannot handle.
Nutritional Advantages
Nothing is better for you than a glass of fresh juice. Citrus fruit is a wonderful source of vitamin C, potassium, calcium, thiamine and niacin. In order to receive the most possible nutrition from your juice, drink it while it is very fresh so the juice does not oxidize and lose nutrition.
When juicing citrus, using whole lemon and lime is acceptable. Do not however, juice whole oranges, tangerines and grapefruit as our digestive system is incapable of handling the chemicals contained in their skin.
Citrus juicers contain pectin, a soluble fiber that helps to lower cholesterol levels.
Types of Citrus Juicers
There are two types of citrus juicers that make two very distinct types of juice, total citrus juice or citrus water.Citrus water has little, if any pulp and is the result of pressing or squeezing of citrus fruit. Total citrus juice is the product all parts of the citrus fruit including skins.
Total citrus fruit contains higher nutrient levels with a frothy or creamy consistency. It is not as sweet at citrus water.
The juicer used to extract total citrus juice is a more complex machine than those used to extract citrus water.
Manual Citrus Juicers
The simplest manual juicer is made of metal, glass or plastic. The fruit is cut in half, inverted and pressed onto the juicer. It is twisted on the juicer to release the juice from the fruit into the receptacle portion of the juicer. This is a very easy, quick method to extract citrus water. It is rather messy as juice squirts from the fruit. Manual juicers are fine if you only want to make a little citrus water at a time but for continuous or large amounts of juicing you will require an electric juicer.
Electric Citrus Juicers
Electric citrus juicers extract very efficiently and smoothly with a motorized reamer and consequebtly extract more juice than manual juicers. One manufacturer makes an electric model designed to handle only one citrus fruit at a time at a very economical price of $17 – whereas the very best citrus juicers sell for around $170 so they are not inexpensive.
They are very easy to use with powerful motors and large feed chutes allowing for juicing whole citrus fruits. Top of the line electric juicers have variable speeds to allow the extraction of juice from fruits with varying textures. One $24 model has pulp adjuster and 34 oz juice capacity. As you can see, electric juicers come in any price range and with various features.
Citrus models are different from other juicers because they are designed specifically for citrus fruit. They are designed to do the least amount of damage to the nutrition contained in the extracted juice while maximizing the amount of juice extracting.
Juicers vary widely in the range of price and features offered. Regardless of the type of juicer you select, manual or electric, you will be rewarded with delicious, nutritious fresh citrus juice to savor.
